Why are Care Labels A Must?
Clothing labels are one of the best marketing tools available in the clothing industry. These labels are the first thing someone looks at when they pick up a garment. If your label looks great and has a design as unique as your garment it can be a sure tool to increase your sales. Once someone looks at your clothing label and likes your garment then you can be sure that he will look out for it on his next shopping spree.
Other than clothing labels that market your clothes there is yet another label that is very important on your garment, this is the care label. The care label is attached to the garment in such a way that it cannot be separated from the garment even when used regularly. The care label has all the important information of the care and maintenance of the garment like the proper wash instructions, the fabric composition etc. The care label also has the size of the garment on it and helps the buyer pick out the right size.
The care labels are attached to every piece of manufactured garment by a rule that was decided by the Federal Trade Commission on Dec 16th 1971. According to this rule all the manufacturers of textiles and clothing should compulsorily attach a care tag to the clothing with the care and maintenance instruction of the product mentioned.
When purchasing a garment the buyer usually reads the wash instructions to see if they meet his needs, if he can dry clean them or home wash them or if the garment needs only a hand wash. Many manufacturers provide more than one set of washing instruction for this very reason. Usually there is an additional tag that says for best results dry clean. A few people also look for the product composition on the care label as they might be allergic to certain fabrics.
As per the rule of the FTC all of the clothing labels should provide the following information:
- Complete instruction and information about regular wash and care of the garment and certain necessary warnings.
- The tag should give some assurance to the customer that if the care instructions are followed properly they can keep the garment from any damage.
- Make sure that he product gives specific details for ordinary use, like for clothes there should be the washing instructions, method of drying, if the garment can be ironed or not and the temperature to use when ironing.
- It is very necessary that terms that the customer can easily understand are used.
- It is necessary that the tag is placed such that it can be visible on purchase.
- If the product is made up of multiple fabrics all the fabric compositions should also be mentioned on the tag.
This care label rule governs and is targeted to all the manufacturers and importers of various textiles and also to the organizations that controls and directs the textile apparel industry.
All these above mentioned points make it very clear that having a care tag attached to the garment is as necessary and important as having your clothing label attached to the garment.
